Tomato Chutney recipe, How to make Thakkali chutney

Thakkali chutney recipe without onion and garlic. spicy, tangy and tasty chutney made from Tomatoes Pureed and with freshly ground masala powder. Easy and quick tomato chutney Pairs extremely well with idli, dosa, uttapam or vada varieties. This home-style tomato chutney stays well for a few days if stored in a refrigerator. but always better to consume it fresh. This tomato chutney is also called as Thakkali chutney in the Tamil language. As tomatoes are known as Thakkali in the Tamil language. if you do not have coconut and want to make chutney for idli or dosa, then do not despair. You can easily make this onion chutney.

Even though mum makes so many chutney varieties, this is her signature dish we call it as red chutney. if you go with tri-color chutney, Tomato Chutney is the best. Kara Chutney Recipe is also very famous in my home and we make it often.

Tomato Chutney Recipe, without onion & Garlic

Chutney with Tomato we call it as Thakkali chutney is also red chutney but the taste entirely different. Today make sharing the Onion Chutney with only 4 ingredients used. Onion, dry red chilly, tamarind, and salt. No Tomatoes used to make onion chutney.  Even this also we can make it with raw onion or fried onion. I will explain both the methods. Still, I remember, my dad doesn’t like the chutneys made in a mixie. amma always grind it in Ammi(manual Grinder) with has unique tastes. Whenever we feel bored of usual chutney amma makes Raw onion chutney that very quick and no cooking involved.

Spicy tangy tomato chutney recipe with pureed tomatoes.

Ingredients
  • To grind Tomato puree:
  • 6-7 medium-sized riped Tomatoes
  • 3 dry red chili
  • a gooseberry sized Tamarind
  • ½ cup water
  • For Thakkali chutney masala powder:
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp fenugreek seeds
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • For tempering:
  • 1 tsp oil
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp urad dal
  • a spring curry leaves
  • 1 tsp Chili powder
  • ⅓ tsp turmeric powder
  • salt as needed
Instructions
  1. make tomato puree, boil tomatoes with tamarind. till the tomatoes become soft and tender.
  2. No need peal the skin, cool down completely and then grind to a nice puree.
  3. Now make masala powder, dry roast the mustard seeds, cumin seeds, fenugreek seeds. till the fenugreek seeds turn brown. Make sure that it should not burn.
  4. Grind the powder and keep aside.
  5. Heat the pan with a tsp of oil and temper with mustard seeds, urad dal, and curry leaves. Add the ground puree and masala powder, turmeric powder, chili powder & salt mix well.
  6. cover and cook for 10 mins in low flame or till the chutney turns thick.
  7. Delicious tasty Thakkali chutney is ready to serve.
Notes
you can boil the red chili along with the tomatoes and tamarind. skip chili powder.
Don't over Roast the masala, just till golden.
Adjust salt according to the spice level of the chilies.
Adding gingelly oil(nallennai) while tempering not only gives flavor, it balances the spice level well.

4. Grind the powder and keep aside.

5. Heat the pan with a tsp of oil and temper with mustard seeds, urad dal, and curry leaves. Add the ground puree and masala powder, salt mix well.
6. cover and cook for 10 mins in low flame or till the chutney turns thick.
7. Delicious tasty Thakkali chutney is ready to serve.

Serve the Spicy  Tomato Chutney along with kollu Idli Recipe (Steamed Rice Millet & Lentil Cake) and  Kumbakonam Filter Coffee Recipe for a complete breakfast.
