Vallarai Keerai Thuvaiyal Recipe with step by step photos and video. Vallarai Keerai Thuvaiyal or Vallarai Keerai Chutney is made with nutritious Toor dal and some coconut. Like Pirandai Thuvaiyal recipe, Vallarai Keerai Thuvaiyal is too good for health.Vallarai Keerai is one of the Tamil Keerai Variety called Brahmi leaves in English. Vallarai Keerai Thuvaiyal / chutney tastes good with rice and idli dosa. It tastes like Paruppu Thuvaiyal/Thogaiyal, no bitter taste.

We should use the Vallarai Keerai in cooking along with the stem. We should not discard the stem. The stem has the medicinal quality.

How to use Vallarai Keerai for cooking?  Since it belongs to a creeper family we should wash well under running water.

 

Step by Step Vallarai Keerai Recipe in Detail:

Vallarai Keerai Thuvaiyal Recipe with Coconut

Heat a pan add ghee or oil. Add the Toor dal or Urad dal, dry red chilli, Hing, Coconut roast well. Finally, add the Vellarai Keerai and saute well. Once the Vellarai Keerai Becomes soft, remove it from the flame. Let it cool for some time.

Ingredients
  • ½ bunch Vallar Keerai
  • 4 dry red chilli
  • 2 tbsp Toor Dal
  • 2 tbsp Coconut
  • 1 tsp ghee/oil
  • A generous Pinch Hing
  • ½ tsp salt
Instructions
  1. Heat a pan add ghee or oil. Add the Toor dal or Urad dal, dry red chilli, Hing, Coconut roast well. Finally, add the Vellarai Keerai and saute well.

Do’s and Don’t

1.Don’t through the Vallarai Keerai stem just trim the edges and use it.
2.Don’t use tamarind to make Vallarai Keerai thogaiyal, thuvaiyal or chutney.
3.Don’t over cook the Vallarai Keerai, just it becomes a soft grind it.
4.Add Coconut while making Vallarai Keerai, even it is Vallarai Keerai Dosa or Vallarai Keerai Kootu(recipe coming soon). since coconut helps to get rid of the bitterness.

    This is the first time I am cooking vallarai leaves.I was reluctant to buy as it will be bitter in taste..Iam happy with the output.I was wondering why tamarind is not added to reduce bitterness ,infact its not needed.I used ghee for sauteeing. It tasted really good and my hubby couldnt stop licking the thuvaiyal. Thank you for the recipe.
