Author : Premalatha Aravindhan Category : Breakfast Recipe Prep and cooking Time: below 30 Mins Cuisine : South Indian serves : 2-3

Ingredients:Rice Upma
  • 1 cup Raw Rice
  • 1/4 cup Toor Dal or Moong dal
  • 2 and 1/2 cup Water
  • 1 tsp Ghee
  • 1/2 tsp Black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp Cumin seeds
  • salt as needed

To Temper

  • 1/2 tsp Mustard Seeds
  • 1 tsp Channa Dal
  • 1 tsp Urad Dal
  • 1 dry Red Chili
  • 1 large pinch hing

Method:
Rice Upma

  • Soak rice for 20 minutes.Spread it in a cloth to dry.
  • Then grind it along with dal, pepper and cumin seeds, coarsely like rava.
  • Add the grinded rice mixture into the pressure cooker.

Rice Upma

  • Heat oil in a pan and then add the tempering ingredients fry it.Once the mustard seeds splutter,Remove it from the flame and add in with the rice mix.
  • Add water and pressure cook to 3 whistles.

Rice Upma

  • Once done add ghee and mix well. You can add grated coconut for taste.

My Notes:

  • Usually people use toor dal but for a twist you can try with moong dal.
  • Soak and dry the rice, grind it coarsely (rice rava). If you have rice rava handy then you can prepare this upma in a jiffy.Just grind the dal, cumin and pepper coarsely and then proceed with second step.

Try this upma with kathirikai Gostu or with coconut chutney or simply with pickle.

Have a nice Day!!!
