Red rice Puttu using Chemba Puttu Podi

Red rice Puttu made with Chemba Puttu Podi(red rice puttu powder), steamed with lots of coconuts and served with Nadan Kadala curry, but I love to have it with Banana. Chemba puttu is made of coarsely ground red Matta rice. Red rice Idli which I have shared recently, my readers asked me shared healthy recipes using red rice. So I am sharing this Red Rice Puttu recipe, it is a straightforward method and shortcut no need to spend hours and hours in the kitchen to prepare Puttu Podi, it’s a quick and easy South Indian Breakfast loaded with nutrients.  In this post, I have shared how to use Puttu Kudam and How to Prepare Puttu using Puttu Kudam in detail.  If you are looking for Soft Kuzha Puttu you can check this recipe, it is a simple and easy recipe too.

What is Puttu Kudam??? Puttu Kudam is a steamer to make Puttu, It has 2 parts one is the bottom Part Shaped like kudam where we have to add water and the top part is the steamer cylindrical tube in which we add flour to make puttu. In between Steamer and kudam one whole plate will be there through that only steam will flow to the steamer and the puttu will get steam. This is all about Puttu Kudam(puttukutti in Malayalam).

Ingredients
  • 1 & ½ cup Red rice Puttu Podi/ Sigappu arisi Puttu Maavu
  • 1 tbsp cup water
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ cup coconut
Instructions
  1. Take a wide bowl to add 1 & ½ cups of Puttu Powder. Add ½ salt to taste and mix it well. Take 1 cup water and Sprinkle water, crumble the flour. Add water in batches and mix well with your fingertips.
  2. Flour needs to hold shape when pressed between the fist and need to break on further pressing. Make a moist flour with a crumbly texture. Rest the flour for 10 minutes.
  3. Meanwhile, boil water in a steamer or if you are using Puttu kudam, add water till the line inside. Drop the while plate inside the cylindrical tube and seal it. now add ¼ cup of freshly grated coconut and then Followed by 2 times ¼ + ¼ cup of puttu flour.
  4. Again add a layer with ¼ cup of coconut, ¼ +1/4 cup of puttu flour on top add ¼ cup coconut, and level it up using a spoon. Gently press it.
  5. Close the puttu Kudam(cylindrical tube) and steam for 8 to 10 minutes or till the steam escapes from top holes. If you are not using the kudam, spread the puttu flour in a cloth and fold it, keep it inside a steamer and steam it. Once steamed switch off the stove.
  6. Carefully open lid and push the whole plate forward using a wooden stick or any ladles from the back. remove the whole plate and serve hot puttu. You can serve it with moong curry, kadala curry, or simply with jaggery.

I used Kitchen Treasures  Chemba Puttu podi, the quality was good and tastes amazing. Not only puttu powder they masala powders also very nice and flavourful.
