Easy Karuppu Ulundhu Chutney or Thogaiyal for idli, dosai, and rice. Black gram dal aka black urad dal chutney made with coconut, karuppu ulundu in Tamil, onion, tamarind, dry red chili, and salt. Very simple available ingredients at home. If you have any shortage of tomatoes you can make this chutney. Very unique thogaiyal variety and healthy too. This thogaiyal goes well with rasam sadam and it is good to have the black urad dal in breakfast. Let’s see how we can include black gram dal in our day to day cooking. Karuppu Ulundu(black Urudal) Thogaiyal and Mallipoo idlis for breakfast.

Karuppu ulundhu thogaiyal recipe for rice, idli, dosa

Ingredients
  • 2 tbsp black Urad dal
  • 4 Dry red chilies (adjust according to ur taste buds)
  • 2 tbsp grated coconut
  • 3-4 tbsp water
  • 5 shallots
  • a small piece tamarind
  • Salt as needed
Instructions
  1. add a tsp of gingely oil, add black urad dal, dry red chilies, coconut,shallots in medium flame until the dal turn golden. take it out in a plate, let it cool for some time.
  2. transfer to the mixie jar, add salt and tamarind, 3 to 4 tbsp water grind it to a coarse paste.
Notes
if you want Karuppu ulundhu chutney, add ⅓ cup water and grind it. Thogaiyal is little thick so i have added 3-4 tbsp water.
roast the dal well otherwise you feel the raw smell in chutney
you can temper with mustard and add it in the final stage.

Take 2 tbsp black urad dal, 2 tbsp coconut, small piece tamarind, shallots, 4 dry red chilies.

Adjust the water if you want chutney consistency to pour little more water and grind it a smooth paste. If you want Thogaiyal to add little water and grind little coarse. Karuppu Ulundu thogaiyal is ready to serve.
