Dindigul Thalappakatti Biriyani

Dindigul thalappakatti biriyani is very familiar among the biriyani lovers. Thalappakatti biriyani is very famous in Dindigul, a city in Tamil Nadu, India. Once i started the Tamil Nadu famous foods series this biriyani recipe struck on my mind first. Thalappakatti biriyani recipe is a unique recipe, not like common biriyani recipes because the flavour of the biriyani rice. Yes, the dindigul thalapakatti biryani recipe use only jeera rice. The spices flavour gives a special taste to biriyani. The substitute for mutton i have used mock mutton(vegetarian) in this recipe. If you check my Briyani recipes in biriyani menu this is the best biriyani that i have made till now.Dindigul means dindigul thalapakatti biryani , next comes on mind dindigul ileoni ,dindigul lock very famous. Ok, coming to the biriyani recipe.

Biriyani RiceBiriyani rice is very important to make dindigul thalappakatti biryani recipe so i have used jeera rice (jira rice) Jeeraga samba rice in Tamil. If you search biriyani recipe in Tamil all recipes use jeera rice because in TamilNadu all biriyani recipes calls for jeera rice. Still some people using basmati rice for Hyderabadi biryani, Kerala biriyani.

Mock mutton

I have used mock mutton, 100% vegetarian and less cholesterol. This tastes exactly like dindigul thalappakatti mutton biryani at the same time we are making vegetable biriyani. If you don’t like to use it you can replace it with mushroom or vegetable of your choice.

Let’s see how to make Dindigul thalappakatti biryani recipe by step by step instructions:

Dindigul Biriyani Recipe

Slice the onion ,tomatoes and split the chillies,make ready.Chop the mint and coriander keep aside. Wash and soak the jeera rice for 10-15 mins. Marinate the mutton with chilli powder, salt, thick curd and garam masala powder.

Heat the oil and the ghee in the biriyani pan and then add the spices,fry well.Now add in the onion,tomato and green chilly fry well. Now add the ginger garlic paste mix well.

Then add the marinate mock mutton , mix well.  Add the water let it to boil and then add the rice mix well. cover and cook it for 10 minutes.

Once the rice start boiling, open the lid and mix the rice slowly without breaking the rice. Once done add the chopped coriander and mint leaves mix well.Here is the delicious Dindigul thalappakatti biriyani is ready to serve.

Biriyani recipe is exactly same like dindigul thalappakatti mutton biryani. The substitute for mutton i have used mock mutton.Used jeera rice to make briyani.

Ingredients
  • 2 cups jeera rice
  • 1 tsp oil + 2 tbsp ghee
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 2 cardamom
  • 3 cloves
  • 2 biriyani leaves
  • 2 medium sized onion
  • 2 tomatoes
  • few coriander,mint leaves
  • 10 chillies split
  • 100 g mock mutton
  • ½ cup thick curd
  • 1 tsp chilly powder
  • 1 tsp salt for marination
  • ½ tsp garam masala
  • 31/2 cups water
  • 1 tbsp salt
Instructions

Notes
You can use basmati rice if you don't get the jeera rice
you can substitute the mock mutton with mushroom or any vegetables.
