Unniyappam(Unniappam) Recipe | How to cook Unniappam | Onam Sadhya Recipes

Unniappam
Unni appam | UnniYappam is a popular snack in Kerala prepared from rice, jaggery, banana and ghee.

Preparation Time : 1 hrs & 15 mins  |   Cooking Time :  20 mins     |     Yields:  15 appams

Ingredients:
Unniappam

1 cup Rice Flour
1 cup Jaggery
2 tsp Semolina(Rava)
1 Banana 
1/2 tsp Sesame Seeds
2 tbsp coconut pieces
1/2 tsp Cardamom powder
1/2 cup water
2 tbsp Ghee
Oil for Frying       

Method:

Unniappam

  • Dry roast the sesame seeds and keep it aside.Heat a drop of ghee and roast the coconut pieces.
  • Boil water and then add in the jaggery,let it to boil till it becomes thick.

Unniappam

  • In a mixing bowl,add in the rice flour,rava,cardamom powder,roasted coconut pieces,chopped banana,roasted sesame seeds.
  • Mix well.The batter should be in dosa batter consistency.If need add little water.Keep aside without disturbing for atleast an hour to ferment.
  • Heat up the paniyaram kadai and then grease it with ghee or oil.

Unniappam

  • Once the kadai gets hot,add a tbsp of batter in each hole.Drizzle little ghee on the side,cover and cook it.
  • Once it started turning brown,using spoon turn the other side.cook and take it out.Repeat the step for remaining batter.Unniappam is ready to serve.

My Notes:

  • Let the batter to ferment for at least an hour.If you  want the instant version add the idly batter and proceed with the remaining step.
  • I used paniyaram kadai to make appam,you can deep fry the appam also.
