Vendhaya Kuzhambu | வெந்தய குழம்பு | Fenugreek Seeds Gravy

Today I am featuring my Grand ma’s simple வெந்தய  குழம்பு  recipe.Most of the people have their own twist on traditional recipes,like my grand ma add shallots to Vendhaya kuzhambu which gives mild taste and nice flavour to the kuzhambu.Do try this delicious kuzhambu and enjoySmile.

Ingredients:

2 tbsp sesame oil
1/4 tsp mustard seeds
1/4 tsp fenugreek seeds
Hing,a generous pinch
10 shallots
A sprig curry leaves
1/4 tsp turmeric powder
1/2 cup thick tamarind extract
1 cup water
Salt to taste
Jaggery , a small piece

To grind :

1/2 tsp fenugreek seeds | vendayam
2 tbsp coriander seeds
3-4 red chillies
1 and 1/2 tsp channa dhal
1 and 1.2 tbsp grated coconut

Method:

Dry roast the grinding ingredients separately and let it cool for some time.Powder it in mixie into fine powder.Keep aside.

Heat oil in a kadai and fry fenugreek seeds,mustard seeds,hing,till splutter.Add shallots and curry leaves,fry till it become soft.

Add the tamarind extract,water,grinded powder,turmeric powder and salt.Let it boil for sometimes,till it becomes thick.Add jaggery finally and switch off the stove.

Here is our flavourful kuzhambu is ready.

Serve it with hot rice and ghee | sesame oilSmile.

    My late precious Amma makes vendaya kulambu almost the same way,sometimes she would deep fry small cubes of potatoes or small cubes of eggplant separately and add it to the kulambu at the end ,this makes it yummy with white rice and pappadam

    My hubby tried this recipe replacing the shallots with onion , tomatoes and lima beans.. it turned out out real good..Tasted very similar to the Thenga aracha kozhambu… This will be a regular on our menu from now…
