Chickpeas Briyani

July 23, 2010 by Premalatha Aravindhan 41 Comments

Chickpeas Briyani:

I like all kinds of briyani, this is one of my fav. This recipe i learned from my sil,she is a great cook.
Whenever i feel boring by preparing the usual sambar and vathakuzhambu, for a change i will make this and  have it simply with papad.Even my daughter also likes this because of the chickpeas…Try this recipe and u can add your favourite veggie also.

Ingredients:

1/2 cup chickpeas
1 cup rice
2 cups water
1 tbsp thick coconut milk
1 tbsp ginger garlic paste
1 inch cinnamon stick
2 cloves
1 cardamon
1 bay leaves
1 tsp oil
1 tbsp ghee
1/2 tsp turmeric powder
1/2 tsp fenugreek seeds
Salt to taste

To grind:

1 onion cut into cubes
1 tomato cut into cubes
3 green chilles
few fresh corriender leaves

Method:

Soak the chick peas overnight and pressure cook it with enough water and keep aside.
Meanwhile grind the grinding ingredients into thick paste no need to add water.
Heat oil in a kadai and add the fenugreek seeds, cinnamon stick, cloves, bayleaves, cardamom and fry them in oil.
Add the ginger garlic paste, salt, turmeric powder and also the grinded paste and let it cook, until the raw smell goes.
I didn’t add the chilli powder because i added green chillies while grinding. If u want more spicy, you can add the chilli powder at this stage.
Add the chick peas without water and cook it well.
Then add the rice into the kadai and mix it with the masala. Finally add the ghee into it and stir it without breaking the rice.
Transfer the rice into the electric cooker and add water and coconut milk.Cover and cook it.
Once the rice cooked nicely transfer it into a serving bowl/hot box.

Once the rice cooked nicely transfer it into a serving bowl/hot box.

Serve the briyani hot with raita/papad.
